This calendar is an annual project I’ve designed and refined over multiple years. The goal has always been to create something useful, visually engaging, and deeply local, celebrating a year of our newspaper’s photography while offering real value to the community.
For many years, the calendar relied on archival black-and-white photography from Fauquier County’s past. Beginning with the 2024 edition, the direction shifted toward a more modern and inclusive approach that reflected the community as it exists today.
Each year, I work with the editorial team to review a full year of news photography and select the moments that best represent each month. Ads are sold for individual months, and I design each placement to integrate seamlessly with the overall layout rather than compete with it.
I developed an automated calendar grid in InDesign and created a clean, consistent layout system that could be reused and refined year over year. I also researched and compiled a curated list of important local phone numbers so the calendar functioned as both a visual piece and a practical household reference.
The 2024 calendar was designed and produced entirely in-house and earned First Place in the 2023 Virginia Press Association Awards. Since then, I’ve continued to evolve the design, including a more modern cover layout for the 2026 edition, reinforcing the calendar as a polished and well-loved annual publication.
