Our team wanted to create something useful, beautiful, and deeply local — a calendar that celebrated a year of our newspaper’s photography while offering real value to the community.
For years, the calendar had featured archival black-and-white photos from Fauquier County’s past. But for 2024, our publisher wanted a more modern and inclusive version — one that reflected the vibrant, diverse culture of our community today.
I was part of the team that combed through a year’s worth of news images, helping choose which moments would appear in the calendar. The ad team sold ads for each month, and I designed each ad to blend seamlessly with the tone of the layout.
Using InDesign, I automated the calendar grid and added custom styling to make the monthly layouts clean and inviting. I also researched and created a full list of important local phone numbers, ensuring the calendar doubled as a useful household reference.
The finished calendar was fresh, community-focused, and fully built in-house. It earned First Place in the 2023 Virginia Press Association Awards and launched a new direction for what has become a beloved annual tradition.
